3D more expensive??? NO!!!

I recently attended several conferences and workshops on new construction technologies.
I was surprised to hear several people saying that BIM was more expensive and that the only way to be cost-effective was to increase our fees. NOT TRUE!!!

In other words, unless the project ownerr is willing to pay more to get a fully coordinated 3D model, nothing will change in the way we do business.

I find that very surprising because nowadays, almost every steel detailer works in 3D, even though the fees remain unchanged. Due to the recession, they even tend to decrease.

How can we explain this? The reason is simple: 3D is not more expensive. The learning curve is steep indeed, but the advantages are remarkable when the implementation is planned appropriately. Why did steel designers switched more quickly to 3D than other professionals? That is a mystery.

All I know is the comments I heard during the various workshops I attended were the same ones I heard from my team ten years ago.

1) At first, they said the software was mediocre.
2) Then it was only useful for large-scale projects.
3) Finally, they considered it superior to any 2D software.

Today, we work in 3D no matter the size of the project and our productivity and the quality of our work is constantly improving.
These arguments alone should convince anybody of the necessity to switch to 3D. And if working in 3D may even help working more rapidly and efficiently in other disciplines, then why not do it?

It is in this perspective that stakeholders of the construction field in Quebec should perceive the implementation of 3D, because if we wait for project owners to nicely agree to pay more for what they believe is the same service, the industry will continue to get distanced by the rest of North America.

We need to keep up with the times...
