In a previous article, I explained why, as current or future 3D software users, we must avoid the pitfall of technological lock-in (choosing what’s currently trendy instead of choosing what’s you need). In an attempt to help you make the best possible decision here’s a list of the different BIM software, sorted by discipline.

In the construction industry, BIM software is defined by its capability to comply with the IFC2X3 standard when importing or exporting. Hence, all the 3D modeling software is not BIM software, regardless of their performance. I believe such a classification is really appropriate since the IFC format works well with all the disciplines, is non proprietary and is by far the most common across the market. It is thus logical that software that doesn’t support the IFC2X3 standard is excluded from the list because it doesn’t allow for upstream and downstream collaboration.

The BuildingSmart organization, responsible for the IFC norm development, now certifies software. This certification’s purpose is to make sure that the IFC2X3 norm is used correctly by software developers. I encourage you to use all these available tools to make sure the software you choose is as useful and adapted as possible.

Are you in a situation where you have to choose between softwares right now? Or have you had to make this decision recently? Share your experience with the community!
