Whether you call him champion, pit-bull, BIM coordinator or “IT guy”, the person in charge of implementing and maintaining your modeling softwares and your BIM processes will play a key role in your company for years to come.

Therefore it is essential that you choose this resource carefully, and most importantly, that you avoid classic mistakes:
* Choosing a candidate solely based on their computer skills;
* Not inquiring about the candidate’s interest for BIM;
* Choosing someone already overloaded with work.

Here are some characteristics you should look for in your future champion in order to successfully implement BIM processes. Finding a candidate who possesses all these qualities is a difficult task, so I ranked them by importance:

1. Leadership, tenacity, commitment

  • This is the champion’s main quality. Implementing BIM is not only technical work, it requires to change many processes. The champion must be able to identify and manage resistance to change. He has to have the ability to get his point across to everybody.

2. Organizational abilities

  • Implementing a BIM process is a structured task. Therefore a champion must possess great organizational abilities to put in place a BIM process management system and a related documentation system.

3. Technical skills and autonomous learner

  • Obviously, a champion must have good technical skills. He must also be an autonomous learner to be able to answer questions from his team.

If you can find a person that has these three qualities, then you definitely found your champion. Let him commit to his task full-time and you will soon see the results.

Good luck with the implementation.
